Thank you to those who have served us this week in providing the activities of the Health and Fitness class, painting the lighthouses, and the Stroller White Pipes and Drums.

The Good News this week is:

Sis. Peek is glad she found her Gospel Principles book which had been missing.
Sis. Morrow is glad that the forecast show a chance of some sun this week.
Sis. Ruth Cunningham is grateful that the worst weather we have had to deal with in Juneau is snow and rain, and not major natural disasters.

Upcoming Events are:

Monday, Jan. 18 @11:00 am - Cleaning at the Dalton’s (4876 Steelhead Street) 4 or 5 sisters needed for about an hour.
Wednesday, Jan. 20 @10:00 am – Mother Education at the Mendenhall Library. Topic of discussion: Organizational Ideas.
Saturday, Jan. 23 – Community Fundraiser for Adara Kollander (daughter of Kathy Buell, granddaughter of Chuck Maccagno). Adara has been diagnosed with a rare kidney disease and is in need of a kidney transplant. Dinner and a Silent Auction @5:00 pm, Live Auction @ 6:00 pm. $10 per adult, $5 for children 10 and under. To be held at the Moose Lodge (8335 Airport Blvd.) For more information please contact Karen Fortwengler at 957-6632 or 523-7726. Donations of auction items, Alaska Airline miles or volunteer time is needed.
Thursday, Jan. 28 @ 7:00 pm – Women of the Old Testament class. This week the discussion will be about Eve. We are looking for a home in the valley to hold this small class in. If you would like to volunteer yours, please call Sister Kearns at 790-3692.
Sunday, Jan. 31 – Missionary Sunday. Please bring a non-member or less-active member to church on this day. The entire Alaska Mission is participating and our ward has a goal of having at least 30 investigators in attendance.
Wednesday, Feb. 3 and 10 @ 6:00 pm in the RS room – Those interested in singing with the RS Choir on Feb. 14 can attend these two practices and learn the music. The RS Choir will be singing once a quarter in Sacrament meeting under the direction of Sister Kirkpatrick and Sister Staack.
Saturday, Feb. 6 @ 10:00 am at the church – Stake RS Conference and Humanitarian Aid Project. Bring scissors plus markers and glue sticks if you have them. We will be making folder games.

Additional announcements:

JP Dalton will hold one more garage sale next Saturday from 7:00-12:00 before he leaves to join his family in Utah. Everything must go! Clothes, furniture, bedding, holiday decorations, house wares, games, etc.
Karen and Gary Kostenko have a rental home available. It is three bedroom and one and a half baths, located on Gee Street. Please pass the word. They can be reached at 789-2875.

Lesson Synopsis for this week:

Sis. Pat Bingham taught the lesson this week from Chapter 2 of the Gospel Principles book entitled, “Our Heavenly Family”. We are ALL literal daughters (and sons) of God. We have the potential to develop His qualities and attributes. We had talents and gifts before we came to earth. We can bless others with these talents and gifts, and can be blessed by others through their talents and gifts. To become more like Heavenly Father, we get to experience life on earth. Trials allow us to better recognize and understand true joy.

Teaching For Our Time: “More Diligent and Concerned at Home” by Elder David A. Bednar, Nov. 2009 Ensign, p. 17. Please read this talk at home or online and be prepared to participate in the discussion.

Good News:

Tamara Criddle is excited to be able to visit with her daughter and new grandbaby in the near future.
Mika Morford is going to Arizona and will get to visit with old friends.
Kris Kearns is excited to get to keep her grandchildren while daughter Mika is away.
Carleen Packham gets to attend her grand daughter's baptism is Oregon.
Carol Stauffer is excited that her daughter Grace turns 14 on Monday.
Caraleen Overson is happy she and her family made it home safely from Whitehorse.

Announcements:

The Adult Education Class for the winter Months will be the Pearl Of Great Price and that classes will start on January 14th 2010 at 7:30 PM on Thursday nights. If you have any questions please contact Elder and Sister Perrett.

Lesson Today:

Today's lesson was from the first chapter in our new Gospel Principles manual. It was entitled "Our Heavenly Father". We talked about all the many things that testify that there is a God, including the earth and her many beauties, the stars, our bodies, the Holy Ghost. God is "the Great Parent of the universe". He is truly our Father and he loves us. He is very patient, wise, loving, constant. We should strive to be like him. We can know God better by reading the scriptures, praying, and obeying his commandments. As we do these things, we will come to know God and eventually have eternal life.

Sister Lowery shared that her mother in law is doing better.
Sister Missionaries will be with us for another 6-weeks.
Sister R. Dalton shared that it was beautiful out at the glacier.
Sister M. Schlechter shared that her brother is leaving for the MTC.

Announcements

Old Testament is the reading for this year.
The newsletter will only go out once a month.
If you don't have your manual for this year check with your visiting teachers.

Good News

Sister Kerns shared that it is Sister Nell's birthday today.
Sister Morford is glad that her dance schools performance is DONE.
Missionaries will be allowed to speak with family this coming Friday.
Sister Overson is closing on a new house.

Good News

Sister Dufresne is moving into a new apartment. (Bad news is she it is in the 3rd Ward)
Sister Stauffer is happy her daughters are coming home.
Sister Lowry's daughter is a seventeen.
It is Sister Peak's Birthday.
Sister Morford is glad that her dance schools performance is Saturday at 2pm... she is also glad that she will have a break for a few weeks after it.
Sister Rosenbruch passed on good news for Sister Dalton - Wendy's eldest daughter will be home soon.

Announcements

Manuals are available for next year, if they are not at the church your visiting teacher will be delivering them.
Friday is the Ward Party, please be seated before 6:30pm.
There will be a baptism for Dave Wilson on December 22nd.

Choir Announcements

There is a Relief Society choir practice Thursday at 6:30pm at Sister Hamblin's house.
Full choir practice Saturday at 11am in the Chapel (dress appropriately).
Full choir practice prior to Church at 8am in the Chapel.

Sister Chenoweth - has been accepted to BYU and will be moving south for campus living in January.
Sister Winchell - Her son just turned 5.
Sister D. Perkins - Glad to be home!
Sister Schlechter - Erik just received his mission call to New York.
Sister Dryer - Moving in a week.

Sisters,

There is no RS newsletter this week, but there are several things you should be aware of, so I will put them all together here. Please be sure to let me know if you have good news you would like to have announced in the future.

Good news:

Sister Peek's family is moving back to North Carolina, so when she is released from her mission, that is where she will go. This is good news for her, because she loved living there before.

Sister Ruth Cunningham is back in RS after having served in the Nursery for a long time.

Sister Tena Williams' son and his family, who are stationed at Fort Hood, are safe and well after the tragedy that took place there this past week.

Service Opportunities:

Sister Lolita Cook needs help with cleaning on Wednesday morning at 10:00. She and her family are leaving on Sunday for there move to North Carolina.

The Activity Day girls are planning on assembling 10 or so boxes for operation Christmas Child and would appreciate donations of school supplies, small toys, hygiene items and money for shipping ($7 per box). Watch for a complete list of what is needed in next week's newsletter. Contact Karlynn Welling for more info.

Prayer Request:

Sister Linda Crapo will be having open-heart surgery on Friday, Nov. 13th. Please include her and her doctors in your individual and family prayers this week. I will give you an update as soon as I have one.

Wednesday, Nov. 11 @ 7:00pm - Young Women in Excellence - for all girls and their parents.

Thursday, Nov. 12 @ 7:00pm - Visiting Teaching Conference and Swap Meet Plan on coming a few minutes early to set your swap items out before the meeting begins. Anything you bring that does not get picked up by someone else, will be your responsibility to take home again. Please bring gift-worthy items only. NO JUNK! Wrapping paper will be provided, so you can get a start on Christmas gifts! Feel free to donate wrapping paper if you have leftovers from previous years. Throughout the evening, VT interviews will be conducted by companionship's. Please bring a small (bite-sized) appetizer or dessert to share. Child care is available if needed. Invite your friends! Please see the attached flyer.

Sunday, Nov. 15 @ 6:00pm - Priesthood Preview - for all boys turning 12 in 2010 and their parents.

Sister Schlechter's son is home from his mission.

Sister Criddle was able to attend the Temple and was able to do work for Toni Allred

Sister Schlechter was glad her "other" brother came home to visit!!

Trunk or Treat is at 6:00pm on Halloween in the church parking lot. 3rd Ward is sponsoring a chili pot-luck. There will be a big tent to take the chili to, or you can bring cornbread instead.

Mother Education -The class will be Wednesday 10/14 at 10 am in the Primary Room. This week we will cover
Allowance/teaching kids about money. We need mothers who have already been through this to come teach those who are in the midst of it! Everyone is welcome, so bring your friends (and kids).

Kris Kearns – Despite rumor (which was true) the Kearns are not moving.
Janet Sanbei – Daughter sang at the football game, and has been excepted into the People to People program, she will be traveling to Australia.
Beth Richardson – Her mother has moved in fully and is living very close to her family.
Jenny Schlechter – Son is doing well in college – and may have learned a thing or two from his mom.

Diane Lowery - Blessed to have 2 new children placed with her family. Also, has a letter from Russia - from an Operation Christmas box.
Heather Kroll - Received a scholarship to do a specialized training for work.
Carol Stauffer - 24th wedding anniversary this week.
Diane Kaiser (Visiting from 3rd Ward) - All injuries are healing.

For Young Women and Parents - Still working on reading the Book of Mormon. As you finish reading please add a paper link to the chain in the classroom. The Young Women activity for this week is Ice Skating - meet at the ice rink at 7pm.
